It was back in 2012 when we launched our rural coliving project in Matera (10 years ago).
Born with the aim of generating a new social impact in Southern Italy, through the promotion of inspirational meetings and exchanges of visions between international guests and the local community, coliving soon became one of the most important projects of our association, generating worldwide friendships and connections as well as continuous evolution for our members.
In these 10 years of activity, we have had the pleasure of hosting in Matera people from all over the world: social innovators, curious travellers, and in recent years especially digital nomads or in general people who work remotely have the possibility to travel and work from the place they prefer.
Focusing in particular on these last guests, the most fascinating thing is that often, what attracts them to Matera is not the city itself, but the possibility to join a place like Casa Netural, place that allows them to comfortably work on their projects and at the same time to share social moments and experiences together with the community and the other professionals who are living in our house.
Nowadays, indeed, more and more so-called digital nomads are combining the possibility of working remotely with their notebooks with a nomadic lifestyle, traveling and merging into different communities as true temporary residents of the place.
And there are more and more coliving spaces as well.
Lots of them have been sprouting up around the world, each with a specific concept based on the values and attitudes of the people running it, from work life balance to connecting with nature. Also in Italy, besides ours, several coliving spaces have sprung up and we had the pleasure of hosting some of their founders, who came to Matera to make friends and share ideas and opinions with us.
From Rome, for example, we were visited by Ernesto Cinquenove, founder of Together, a cross-inspirational place and “community house” that offers cultural stimulation to the individuals who live there.
A 200-square-meter apartment in the heart of Trastevere in Rome, since 2013 this space has combined the living possibilities that a metropolitan city like Italy’s capital can offer with the smaller, and more comfortable social dimension of the community that inhabits the house.
Then from Turin we had the pleasure to host Vito Scilabra, cofounder of Lomihouse, a space created in recent years with the idea of bringing together different generations and cultures and living together moments of celebration and work. Arriving in Matera with his two daughters Penelope and Allegra, who live with him inside the space, he told us about the genesis of the project and how this housing model can be stimulating not only for students, tourists and digital nomads, but also for children and teenagers like his girls, who discover different cultures and professions every day in this way.
Furthermore, over the years, through the stories of various digital nomads, we have also gotten to know other spaces in the Italian territory. For example, Daniel, during his stay with us in Matera, told us about his idea of visiting Tertulia Farm, a rural coliving and coworking space nestled in the forests of Mugello (FI), Tuscany. A place that sounds really rejuvenating!
While many other guests, travelling through Southern Italy, told us about beautiful experiences in nearby Calabria at Home 4 creativity, where Roberta, Roberto and Alba transformed their home in the countryside into a coliving space to open themselves to confrontation with cultures and thoughts from all over the world.
In short, coliving is for all intents and purposes a phenomenon that is clearly growing not only worldwide but also in Italy, confirming itself as a really important tool in the perspective of promoting a different conception of living and working and an effective model for the development of multicultural and intergenerational communities.
